Lilly is an accomplished leader, student and athlete. A recent graduate of Germantown Academy in Fort Washington, PA, Lilly started her freshman year at Tufts University in Medford, MA, where she plans to play women's basketball.  Lilly exemplifies Toby's traits of loyalty, humility, athleticism and compassion, all part of our search for the ideal recipient of the Toby Merrill Scholarship.  At GA, Lilly was an outstanding student, a successful three-sport athlete (basketball, lacrosse and water polo) where she served as Captain over multiple years, a four-year member of the school band, and a writing center advisor. In addition to these impressive activities, she also held one of the school's highest leadership positions, House Prefect. Lilly's strong ties to Germantown Academy, where Toby's daughters attend school, and her pursuit of continuing education at a prestigious liberal arts institution where she can participate in Division III athletics is reminiscent of Toby's experiences, and honors his legacy.  In her junior year autobiography, Lilly wrote, “This year, I have decided to work on being my best self in every way. To not just focus on sports, or school, but to focus on me as a whole human being … I am allowing myself to make mistakes, to stumble, or struggle, as I realize now what I hadn’t before—that obstacles are okay. I understand that in order to succeed, one must expect success, know that sometimes failure is inevitable, and what truly matters is how you respond to a personal setback.”  Lilly's compassion and strength in helping to support her family throughout her mom's battle with cancer inspired us. She is an impressive young woman with a bright future.  We wish her the best in her future endeavors.
